Alibaba Cloud (Aliyun) is the leading public cloud in China and a strong option for teams that need presence in mainland China, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Alibaba Cloud’s pricing model mirrors AWS and Azure in structure — on-demand, pay-as-you-go, and reserved instances — but with regional pricing, currency, and compliance considerations that materially change the bill for international workloads.

Compute: ECS Instance Families

Alibaba Cloud Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances are grouped into families comparable to AWS and Azure:

  • General purpose — g6, g7, g8. Balanced CPU and memory, comparable to AWS m5 and Azure D series.
  • Compute optimized — c6, c7. For batch and high-throughput workloads.
  • Memory optimized — r6, r7. For in-memory databases and big data.
  • Burstable — t6. CPU credits for low-traffic workloads, similar to AWS t3.

A ecs.g6.large (2 vCPU, 8 GiB) on-demand in cn-hangzhou (the main China region) lists at roughly CNY 0.5 per hour, which converts to approximately $0.07 USD — competitive with AWS m5.large. Pricing in international regions such as ap-southeast-1 (Singapore) is denominated in USD and is typically 10 to 20 percent higher than the China regions.

Storage: OSS Tiers

Alibaba Cloud Object Storage Service (OSS) offers Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive tiers. Standard storage in cn-hangzhou starts at approximately CNY 0.12 per GB-month (around $0.017 USD), making it one of the cheapest object storage options globally for China-resident data. International regions are priced in USD and align closely with AWS S3.

Free Tier and Trial

Alibaba Cloud does not offer an always-free tier comparable to AWS or GCP, but new accounts receive a free trial that includes 1 ECS instance (the ecs.t6-c1m1.large) for 3 months, plus limited OSS, RDS, and CDN quota. The trial is restricted to new accounts and to specific regions, so it is most useful for proof-of-concept deployments rather than production workloads.

Discount Programs

  • Reserved Instances — 1-year and 3-year commitments, up to 55 percent off on-demand in the China regions.
  • Savings Plans — a newer pay-as-you-go spend commitment similar to AWS Savings Plans.
  • Preemptible Instances — interruptible spare capacity priced up to 90 percent off, with a minimum lifetime of 1 hour before potential eviction.
